DEI Strategy & Diversity

I love data, especially when it comes to DEI strategy. Tracking diversity in the talent pipeline and the speed at which women, LGBTQ, and people of color advance are my jam. However, before diving headfirst into data analysis, I’ve begun to ask: are numbers the key to unlocking true inclusion?

Consider this:

  • Data can perpetuate bias: Algorithms (e.g. candidate application screening software) reflect the historical inequalities they're trained on. Are we amplifying existing problems?

  • Obsessing over metrics can miss the human story: Numbers tell part of the tale, but lived experiences and qualitative data paint the full picture and explain “the why”

  • The "quantification trap": Reducing complex issues like inclusion to mere numbers risks missing the nuances and emotional realities at play.

Data has its place, but let's not forget empathy, qualitative research, and open dialogue are essential ingredients for a truly transformative DEI strategy.
